Comic Book Reviews: Green Hornet #5 and Batman & Robin #23

Thanks to a delay at the comic store I frequent, I actually have two reviews to go through in the audio blog. Briefly, though, let me touch on the two books.

Green Hornet #5 advanced the story and was its typical enjoyable writing coupled with gorgeous art. Its biggest issue is that it throws a lot of subplots out at once and then pays them off quite a few pages later. That gets irritating because you have to go back and remember where the subplot left off. That tends to happen when information is fired at you so rapidly that you can't take it all in.

That said, the storyline is still really interesting and it's always badass to see Kato and the Hornet fight. Definitely worth picking up.

Batman and Robin Nightwing is a great finish to the 5 stages of grief thing Bruce has been going through. It gives a good payoff for Bruce and Alfred, though not as much for Dick. The art from Patrick Gleason is its usual greatness and I really do enjoy the heart Peter Tomasi puts into his work. It's worth looking at, especially if you've followed the arc or simply liked what you saw in the Batman and Robin Catwoman issue.

Why I... think Ben Affleck will be a good Batman... in a bad Superman movie [WITH AUDIO]

My title is too long, but there's also a review of 2010's Leap Year movie in my audio blog. Why? Because it came across my TV and wanted to discuss the first movie I've seen that uses Flogging Molly in its soundtrack.

Anyway, with all the massive discussion in the past few days about Ben Affleck being Batman, I thought I'd give my thoughts on the decision. For those who can't listen, here's a brief summary I think that Ben Affleck will be a good Batman if you like the style of Frank Miller's 1980s Batman, which I do....

BUT that most likely means the film will be reminiscent of The Dark Knight Returns, which means that we'll probably be getting a Frank Miller style Superman. I'm not as big a fan about that.

As a whole, if they can complete Superman's arc into becoming a true "Superman" and Affleck isn't given excessive brooding time and one-liners, this will be a good setup for the Justice League movie. And honestly, that's all that matters to me.

For my full thoughts, and a bonus movie review, listen below.

Comic Book Reviews: Superman Unchained #3 and Batman '66 #2

Later today, there is a vlog coming about Ben Affleck as Batman, but until then, here are my thoughts on the two books I got last week.

I would note that Justice League Dark is not getting a review besides the fact that the little bit I read was stagnant and boring, and I really have lost all desire to see how this crossover pans out. I truly hope "Forever Evil" holds my attention a little bit more.

Briefly, I'll give my thoughts if you don't have time to get an in-depth look at the story. Superman Unchained remains a strong title and is getting stronger as the plot seems to start coming together. The villain isn't necessarily evil and that does make him a little more compelling. If you want a look at a story that appears to parallel elements of Action Comics #775, this is a great book for you.

Batman '66 is now my favorite title. The style of art is brighter than most DC books and it's Batman and Robin being really heroic. Plots that the show didn't get to do are being addressed here, and the tone is very much like the show. I highly recommend adding this book to your pull list.
